A Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu says President John Mills as the Commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces must ensure the ongoing biometric registration exercise is peaceful.
Mr. Boadu said the President as the appointing authority cannot exonerate himself from what he [Boadu] says is the unprofessional conduct of some police officers who fail to maintain security at the registration centres and allegedly watch thugs from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) assault NPP supporters.
President Mills at a durbar of chiefs in the Central Region where he was on a day’s visit to inspect the ongoing registration exercise Friday, said he was not a “law enforcement officer” to prosecute hooligans disrupting the ongoing biometric exercise.
He reminded critics that the police were well equipped and competent enough to perform their statutory duties without undue interference by the executive head.
But John Boadu on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme said the unfortunate comments by President Mills have exposed the double standards at the presidency.
He noted that the President has demonstrated that he was deceiving Ghanaians when he said he would ensure peace before, during and after the December general elections.
The NPP Deputy Communication Director said like many Ghanaians, he expected the President as the father of the nation to calm down tensions and condemn the violence in no uncertain terms and not to take a swipe at critics.
John Boadu stressed that the NPP had not asked President Mills to interfere in the work of the security personnel but rather to ensure discipline within the force and crack the whip when necessary.
He added that the NPP would not sit unconcerned and watch President Mills plunge the country into mayhem just to cling onto power.
But Deputy Propaganda Secretary of the ruling NDC, Solomon Nkansah, a co-panelist on the programme said President Mills remains committed to ensure a peaceful elections.
He said attempts by the NPP to associate President Mills with the violence that has characterized the ongoing biometric registration especially in the Odododiodoo constituency will be an exercise in futility.
Solomon Nkansah urged the NPP and its flag-bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo to rescind its decision to execute the infamous “all-die-be-die” mantra ahead of the December polls.
However, Progressive Peoples' Party (PPP) Parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wugon, William Duworkpor who agreed with John Boadu said the President cannot exempt himself from the police service's inability to provide adequate security at the various polling centres.
He said the buck stops with President Mills to prove to the world that he [Mills] will walk the talk on his promise to ensure a violent free elections in December.
