The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Professor Evans Atta Mills has appealed to people living in flood-prone areas to vote him into power to relieve them of their plight.
Speaking during a tour of areas hardest hit by last weekend’s rainstorm which killed six people and rendered thousands homeless, Prof Atta-Mills said government has turned a blind eye on the poor drainage system in most of these communities.
He promised to address the situation should he come to power. “He is campaigning for the people to vote for him as a good alternative to solve their problems,” Joy News correspondent, Alex Kwabena Mensah said.
Prof. Atta-Mills called on disaster management organisations and institutions such as the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the 48 Engineering Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to move in quickly to rectify the problem facing people in low areas.
Prof. Atta-Mills is expected to also tour Mallam, Gbawe, Weija, Sowutuom, Santa Maria and Kwashie-bu to get first hand information about the extent of damaged caused to life and property.
These areas were most affected by the rainstorm and several houses there were immersed in water. Prof. Mills would also visit the homes of those who lost their lives in the flood and sympathize with their families.
In a related development, the Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama and the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman are also touring the areas to access the extent of damage.
