President John Evans Atta Mills has pledged to support the cocoa sector in order to ensure that Ghana becomes the leading cocoa producer in the world.
He said this while commissioning a new cocoa processing plant in Takoradi this Friday.
“We will do what it takes as government to further promote the production of cocoa to such a level that we will become the number one producer in the world,” he affirmed.
President Mills also reiterated government’s commitment to cocoa processing, adding that it was a huge potential for creating jobs and a measure that will add more value to Ghana’s cocoa.
Singling out Mrs Patricia Poku-Diaby, owner of the company for praise, President Mills said her ingenuity was an indication that “the Ghanaian, when given the opportunity, can rise to the highest level."
President Mills also tasked the Ghana Cocoa Board to ensure that the company does not become “a white elephant” by regularly providing it with cocoa to run its business.
The plant, Plot Enterprise, is the first Ghanaian owned company in the cocoa sector and employs over one hundred Ghanaians.
The plant has a production capacity of 32,000 metric tonnes of cocoa beans per annum and is expected to produce cocoa liquor, cocoa butter and cocoa cakes.
