Commercial drivers have been reacting to the recent review of fuel prices by National Petroleum Authority (NPA) which maintained the previous prices of petroleum products. While some do not mind if fuel prices go up, others prefer to have constant supplies even if they have to pay for the commodity at a higher price. Some residents are also asking the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to take its time with fuel prices as they claim “the current economic conditions are harsh”.These opinions were gathered when Joy News’ Yaa Gyamfi went out to find out what some commercial drivers think about fuel pricing, which is periodically reviewed by the National Petroleum Authority. The NPA have instituted a bi-weekly review of the prices of petroleum products to make sure that ex-pump prices are adjusted based on international market prices.Fuel prices have been revised twice this year. In May, the NPA scraped fuel subsidies to help reduce government’s budget deficit. The action resulted in a three percent hike in the prices of petrol and liquefied petroleum gas and two percent in that of diesel.Though fuel prices were increased, there was no reflection of the increase in transportation fares. There has however been no further increment in the prices of petroleum products.
Joy News’ Yaa Gyamfi interviewed Eric Martey the Supervsior at the Teshie Total Filling Station and Albert Tei, the Manager of Maxxon Filling Station who both confirmed that as of July 1, fuel prices have not been increased.Prices have been maintained by the NPA after its last bi-weekly review.
