The Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Company says it will soon begin providing free transport to the aged across the country, as part of its social intervention services.

The company which is already providing free transport services to pupils of basic schools will this time include persons aged 60 and above. 

The deputy Managing Director of the company, John Awuku Dzuazah disclosed this in Koforidua during an end of year dinner and award ceremony for staff in the Eastern Region.

He stated that the company, in collaboration with government has imported 200 new buses to augment its current fleet.

He however explained that these buses will only provide inter-city service. As part of effort by the company to increase revenue by cutting down the corrupt practices associated with ticket racketeering, electronic ticketing system will be introduced, Mr.Awuku disclosed.

"These are measures to ensure that the estimated 40% of revenues that are diverted into individual pockets are halted," the deputy MD said.

Mr. Akoto Otupiri Darko, the Eastern Regional Manager of MMT bemoaned the huge revenues that are channeled through the maintenance of broken down vehicles as a result of poor nature of roads in the region.

Eastern Regional Minister, Helen Adjoa Ntoso hinted that government will soon award contracts for rehabilitation of the many poor roads in the region to fix the current challenges facing road users in the region.

She charged the MMT staff to be dedicated to their work and contribute significantly to the success of the company to realize its dream of becoming an internationally-recognized transport service provider.
