Former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has warned that allegations of bribery and vote-buying at the recent congress of the NDC in Sunyani could weaken the party’s internal democracy.
Some losing aspirants have claimed that they lost because candidates with the alleged backing of the Presidency, bribed and distributed items such as mobile phones to influence the delegates.
Nana Konadu said the party needs to address the issue of bribery immediately if it still stands on the motto of probity and accountability.
“I think that we should move away from what other parties are doing and come back to our basics; our basics [are] what our founder laid down for us. And he says it very clearly, that our party should be made of people with integrity, be honest,” she said.
“And if people who have come in this time feel that they can throw it overboard, I think they have to rethink it. Integrity is all we really have. If we lose that integrity, we might as well be called NPP because that’s what they do.”
Asiedu Nketia betrayed her trust
Mrs. Rawlings has also dismissed suggestions by the general secretary Johnson Asiedu-Nketia that she will not be a unifier.
“Mr Asiedu Nketia in his effort to try and buttress his own campaign, has shot himself in both legs and has cut his arms on top of it.
“If you want political power, you don’t destroy the thing that can give you political power,” Mrs Rawlings lamented.
According to the former first lady, Mr Asiedu Nketia has on several occasions consulted her on “areas that he felt the party was not doing well” for her to help out with her “women.”
“I am surprised that he can go into the open and actually make those remarks,” she said.
Mr Asiedu Nketia has in earlier interviews with the media denied speaking against the 31st December Women’s Movement which the former first lady presides over.
The statement stems from an a speech by Mr Asiedu Nketia in Kumasi in which he reported promised to eliminate parallel women’s groups in the party if his mandate is renewed for another term.
