Sulley Muntari came in from the cold and scored his first club goal in a year to give Inter Milan a battling 1-0 Serie A win at Genoa on Friday night.
The Ghana midfielder has barely featured under the new coach, Rafael BenÃtez, this term but, after coming on for the injured Esteban Cambiasso, he unleashed a 25-yard drive on the stroke of half-time which the goalkeeper Eduardo somehow let in.
Muntari scored in first-half injury time when he collected the ball outside the area.
His shot appeared to be heading comfortably into Genoa goalkeeper’s grasp, but bounced at the last minute and deflected off the Portuguese into the net.
The Ghanaian’s performance has lifted the pressure on him following scathing criticism he faced while playing for his country and club in recent months.
Even so Inter should have taken the lead in the 29th.
Muntari played the ball across the face of goal, but despite having time and being unmarked Samuel Eto’o blazed high and wide with the goal at his mercy.
The Portugal keeper redeemed himself slightly in the second half when keeping out Jonathan Biabiany’s volley while Genoa’s Luca Toni was a constant menace as the hosts missed several chances.
Muntari’s goal failed to spark Inter after the break and the best Rafa Benitez’s side could manage was two free kicks from Wesley Sneijder that flew harmlessly over the bar.
