Indian businessman, Ashok Kumar Sivaram reportedly deported after his resident permit expired has appealed to the Interior Minister to renew his permit.

In a petition dated March 14, lawyers for the Indian said their client’s absence in the country will be injurious to his company, Jai Mai Communications Limited.

Mr Sivaram’s drama-filled deportation last week, the second time in less than a year has raised suspicions about the true reasons for the action.

The deportations were done by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) under the direction of the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery.

The businessman was first sent to India in June last year but returned in August after an Accra High Court nullified the GIS action.

After several pleas to have his residence and work permits renewed, the Immigration Service refused to do that.

Buoyed by a Supreme Court ruling in March 2018 quashing the lower court’s decision on the matter, Mr Sivram was deported for the second time.

But the Indian’s lawyers have expressed their disappointment at the treatment meted out to their client when he has no criminal record.

“Surprisingly, on 11 March 2018, officers of the Ghana Immigration Service stormed the residence of Mr Ashok Kumar Sivaram and with blocks broke into his room and forcibly took him out of the country the same day,” the petition said.

The lawyers want Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery to reconsider his decision to allow their client back into the country.

“It is instructive to point out that Mr Sivaram had lived in Ghana for the past 18 years without any criminal record,” Attorney of the Indian, George Otempong Dankwa said.
