The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has begun a massive evacuation of residents in major river valleys across the country in readiness for predicted torrential rains this year.NADMO is focusing on the valleys of the Volta, Pra, Dansu and the Ankobra.Thousands of residents are expected to be moved to where the organisation calls "safe havens".The National Coordinator of NADMO, Kofi Portuphy, said the evacuation plan was activated following heavy rainfall predictions from the meteorological service.According to Mr Portuphy, NADMO has also embarked on public education and public information programmes over the past months in attempts to sensitise residents about potential dangers of the floods.Kofi Portuphy said NADMO has been forced to focus more on preventive measures due to lack of funds to deal with the aftermath of major flood related disasters. He is, therefore, advocating for a national disaster fund that will draw on taxes to guarantee ready cash for the work of the organisation.“We can create for the nation a disaster fund, that will come from the national revenue and that fund will be like GETFund [or] Road Fund”, he proposed. He said even though parliament has approved some budgets to facilitate the organisation’s work, it is not adequate to meet the “challenges” that confront them.Residents affected by Monday’s flood in parts of the capital, for instance, are appealing to authorities to come to their aid after floods destroyed their properties. But NADMO has confirmed to Joy News it will be impossible to grant any help to affected flood victims now because they lack resources.
