Cabinet is considering for approval, a bill to establish the National Disaster Management Service in place of the current National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The bill is yet to be approved by Cabinet and will be sent to Parliament to be passed into law, to effect the name change.
The move according to Information and Media Relations Minister Mahama Ayariga, is to further strengthen our institutional arrangement for the management of disasters.
Mr. Mahama Ayariga stated these while addressing journalists at the Flagstaff House, Thursday. The decision to change it into a service according to him, is informed on two grounds -to restructure it to become more responsive and resource it to become more efficient.
“…it is an attempt to restructure the organization to be more responsive and to focus also on prevention; to have structures closely at the Assembly level to deal with issues of prevention.
The second, is also to try and put in place a financing regime for dealing with disaster issues…to have a standing arrangement that provide funding for disaster management and efficient, effective and rapid control.
He said when the bill is considered, the new National Disaster Management Service will have structures at various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to fast track disaster prevention.
