NAGRAT threatens strike over unpaid allowances

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is threatening to embark on a strike on September 30, 2015.

This, according to the teachers, is in view of government's failure to pay them their annual incremental allowances in the last three years.

The teachers said they had an agreement with government that they will receive an increment in their salaries every year, but this has not been done.

NAGRAT says government has ignored issues bordering on their conditions of service despite countless promptings.

They are also questioning why new teachers have not been paid their transport allowances, especially for teachers in remote areas.

The teachers raised these issues when they addressed a news conference earlier today in Accra.

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, Senyo Kwamikorkor says the teachers will go on strike on September 30, 2015 if government does not act.

“Government of the day does not want to respect this profession and it is very bad for people to work for several months without being paid”, he said.

He called on teachers across the country to prepare for the strike so “that government can feel the pinch”.
