I am deeply saddened by the transition of Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng. He was a literary colossus who served in various high-profile capacities. He was a former president of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) and former chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC) from November 2015 to November 2018. He was also a former editor and columnist of ‘The Mirror’, a popular newspaper in Ghana.
Nana paved the way for me as an emerging writer after the completion of my first degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). As a contemporary of my beloved father, whom he described as an excellent writer.
He promptly registered me as a member of the Ghana Association of Writers. On the day of my registration, we had spoken extensively about topics ranging from Pan-Africanism, Afrocentrism to politics. However, the highlight of our conversation was when I mentioned Tupac Shakur for his bravado in addressing such issues.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng delved deeper into his life, tracing his maternal influence amongst others. At that moment, I knew I was home. He encouraged me over the course of my literary journey until I became an award-winning writer. I could tell from his demeanour that he was not the least surprised as he knew my potential.
When I was adjudged the third prize winner in 2018 for my piece, “My Lost Friend”, he called to congratulate me and said, “Now you’re an award-winning writer, therefore, you need to take your writing seriously”. To wit, “you’re just getting started.” When I won the first prize award in 2021, I remember he gave me a high five whilst sitting in the front row as I descended the stairs. He was always willing to share a few nuggets with colleagues and mentees alike. I knew he was ill and hoped for his recovery. However, he exited the stage after playing his part diligently.
MY TORCHBEARER (ODE TO NANA KWASI GYAN-APENTENG)
It was embedded in my deoxyribonucleic acid before I emerged
Staying afloat means a significant amount of mass remains submerged
No matter how skilled a swimmer you are
To survive in an ocean unbacked; the question is how far?
He guided me out of my nest in order to fly beyond my horizon
For he knew I’ll be wholesome before my dough began rising
“Now you’re an award-winning writer…”, he congratulated with an appraise
His guidance and morale booster had sparked within me an uprise
Now, I navigate deep waters with my head up
When you dwell in your passion, you never get fed up
You only take a rest, rejuvenate and resume
That is the trajectory of legends; I state, and not presume
I am settled that he passed the baton to future literary sprinters
In order that their heat will keep the world warm in winter.
