Menhyia South Member of Parliament, Mr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, says he is unperturbed by demands for his apology by residents of Ashaiman in Accra, over claims he referred to them as gutter-dwellers. The residents say during a heated argument on the floor of Parliament on Friday July 5, between their MP, Mr Alfred Agbesi and Menhyia South MP, the latter referred to the Ashaiman MP as a gutter-dweller. Subsequently, the queenmothers and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in Ashaiman, held a news conference urging Mr Opoku-Prempeh to retract his statements and render an apology to the people of Ashaiman. But the Menhyia South MP otherwise called "Napo"said, he was not moved by their demand for a retraction of his comments, and would not apologise because his comments had been misconstrued. According to Mr Opoku-Prempeh, Mr Agbesi, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, called him undisciplined and disrespectful. Mr Opoku-Prempeh said in reply, he told Mr Agbesi to restrain himself since such insults could land both of them ”in the gutter where he [Agbesi] lives.” He said the word "live" did not mean Agbesi’s residence, but his personal conduct. The Ashaiman residents said until the Menhyia South MP apologises for using those words, allegedly against them, they will not respect the House. But Mr Opoku-Prempeh said involving the House would be injurious. “Even if I have said something, what has it got to do with Parliament?”, he demanded.
