Arsene Wenger has moved to suggest that financial reasons are behind Samir Nasri's expected move to Manchester City.
The France international is set to complete a switch to the Etihad Stadium before the transfer window closes and Wenger admits that he has never doubted Nasri's love for Arsenal.
"I have never questioned Samir’s love for this club," Wenger said, as quoted by the Times.
"You work in a newspaper. You can love your newspaper, and somebody offers you three times more, you can leave your newspaper and still love the newspaper where you were before. It’s the same. We have a choice to make always.
"You can sign a contract somewhere for money, but it does not represent such a huge amount once you are on the football pitch.
"Even if I played against you this afternoon on the beach I will want to win and we will play for zero. I don’t think the motivation to win the game is linked with money."
Despite the persistent rumours - and Arsenal seemingly resigned to losing the player - Nasri has been included in the Gunners’ squad for the clash against Liverpool amidst an injury crisis and Wenger stated that, as long as the playmaker is being paid by the club, there is no reason he should not play.
"He’s in contention for a position in the team against Liverpool," Wenger continued.
"You do your job until the last day of your life at the club. If Samir plays against Liverpool he can prove how committed he is to this club.
"He is paid this month by Arsenal FC. Why should he not play?
"The fans will want Arsenal to play well and win the game. They want to see good players and to win the football game.
"The majority of our fans are behind our players and I think they will show that."
