The Executive Director of the ARK Foundation, Angela Dwamena-Aboagye has called on the government to institute a national policy on parenting to improve the quality of parental care Ghanaian children receive.
According to Mrs. Dwamena-Aboagye, any crusade to improve the quality of parenting in our society should be initiated and led by the government of the day.
She warned that the absence of a national policy on parenting could have adverse effects on the quality of children raised in the society and their future roles as responsible adults.
Mrs. Dwamena-Aboagye made these remarks on Multi TV’s talk show, Status Quo. The show assessed the preparedness of Ghanaian mothers to offer good parenting to their children.
The Deputy Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs [MOWAC], Hajia Hawawu Boya Gariba, who was on the show, conceded that the country had no direct policy on parenting, a development she attributed to resource constraint at the Ministry.
She was however quick to add that MOWAC would begin work on developing a national policy on parenting in consultation with other stakeholders.
The Deputy Minister expressed concern about modern forms of parenting which she said had departed from what used to be the norm. She noted that in times past, parenting used to be a communal responsibility but it is gradually being made the sole preserve of the parents of a child.
She thus advised parents to develop the right parental skills to give the best parental care to their children.
Status Quo airs on Sundays at 9pm and hosted by Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah
