The National Chairman of the opposition NDC, Dr Kwabena Adjei is reported by the Daily Guide newspaper to have escaped narrowly from a mob attack at the hands of enraged youth of Nkoranza North in the Brong Ahafo region.
But for the timely intervention of Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi and Mr Boakye Kyeremanteng, NPP Presidential candidate last Tuesday, the former psychology lecturer of the University of Ghana would have been lynched for badmouthing the ruling government and the people of Nkoranza North as he tried to galvanize votes for his party’s candidate.
The newspaper said the apparently frustrated NDC Chairman chose a wrong venue to vent his spleen when he stepped on the raw nerves of the youth of Nkoranza North whose idol, Eric Amoateng had stepped down prompting the holding of the bye-election.
“Dr Adjei was saved by the skin when dozens of angry youth in the constituency pounced on him for touching on their sensibilities and referring to them as a bunch of drug couriers whose actions were embarrassing the nation”, the paper said.
The near blood-letting and its attendant heckling, Daily Guide gathered took place at Onipa Hia Moa, a town near Dwene Woho in the Manso Zone of the constituency when voting in the recent bye-election was smoothly going on.
According to the story, the NDC Chairman who arrived at Onipa Hia Moa at about 1.00 pm on March 13, 2007 in the company of four of his body guards to monitor the bye-election, went on an insulting spree when his party agents hinted him that turnout in the area known to be his party’s stronghold was not too impressive for the NDC.
Agitated by the situation report, Dr Adjei went into tantrums taking out his frustrations on almost every being in site.
Describing the NPP as cocaine dealers who did not deserve to rule Ghana, the NDC Chairman contended that the party’s dealings in drugs had embarrassed the nation to the extent that prominent Ghanaians traveling abroad were searched right into their pants.
According to him, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Ebenezer Sekyi Hughes had been a victim of the body search, which he described as humiliating and went ahead to attribute the development to the ruling party.
Touching on the sensibilities of the locals, he referred to Nana Eric Amoateng, former MP of Nkoranza North who incident\ally occupied a reputable traditional position in his native town and blatantly insinuated that his arrest and detention in New York was a disgrace to his kinsmen.
Unfortunately for him, his attentive audience was no other than an already tensed up NPP youth from Techiman and Tuobodom, who had converged there to prevent the notorious “Azorka Boys’ of Tamale from entering the constituency.
And instead of getting the applause that he expected after his ‘lecture’, Dr Kwabena Adjei had the very opposite.
The angry youth pounced on him and his body guards, held them by the throat in readiness to possibly spill blood, but were prevented by the timely intervention of Hon. Ameyaw Akumfi and Boakye Agyarko.
Daily Guide gathered that even as the minister and presidential aspirant pleaded for his release and virtually formed a human shield in an attempt to whisk the visibly shaken Adjei to safety, the youth managed t physically heckle and elbow him considerably.
The black 4x4 vehicle also banged a couple of times before sanity eventually prevailed.
Upon being given a breather, the NDC chairman did not waste any time, zooming off from the scene.
