The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea has launched a scathing attack on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the manner in which they shrouded the health of the late President Mills in secrecy.
According to Nana Akomea, “the issue of President Mills’ health was handled in a manner that did not show candour, transparency and integrity in governance”.
The NPP Communications Director was speaking on Joy FM’s and Multi TV’s news analysis programme Newsfile Saturday. Nana Akomea stated that there were deliberate efforts by government to hide from the people of Ghana the true state of President Mills’ health.
He added that in their quest to hide the true state of Mills’ health, some people in government went “absurd length to be able to perpetuate this falsehood and lies upon Ghanaians”.
Nana Akomea posited that if the NDC government had really wanted to clear the air of misconception and rumuors surrounding Mills’ health, they should have made public the true state of the President’s health rather than countering the rumuors with untruths.
He said people who made public comments about the health of President Mills always suffered personal attacks by people within government. Akomea cited Sekou Nkrumah and Nana Akufo-Addo who came under barrage of attacks in his goodwill message to then President Mills who was in the US for a medical-up.
According to government functionaries at the time, President Mills was only going for a medical check-up thus Akufo-Addo goodwill letter which had wished Mills "well in his treatment" was deemed as hypocritical and making mockery of the late President.
According to Nana Akomea, even when it was visible that the health of President Mills had deteriorated, he was portrayed as being physically fit with his appointees going as far as making the late President jog at the airport on his return from a medical check-up in the US.
He said the President's health was of utmost importance to the people who voted him to power adding that Ghanaians were not calling for President Mills' resignation but were rather concerned over his failing health which needed to be addressed.
