The last son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Dr Sekou Nkrumah, has said Ghana's economic growth is being undermined by the policies of the leadership of the National Democratic Congress which is retarding the development of the country and creating multiple problems. He said to restore the economy to its rightful footing; he was working assiduously to ensure that the current administration, led by president John Evans Mills, loses the 2012 presidential elections. Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Dr Sekou Nkrumah insisted that although he was still an active member of the NDC, he would only rejoin the party's campaign when the Mills administration was voted out. “The current economic struggles are a direct result of the lack of vision and direction the leadership of the NDC has allowed the country to experience,” he stated. Although he declared that he was not a card-bearing member of the New Patriotic Party, he would vote for the party, stressing that “only NPP can kick this slow-paced administration out”. Dr Nkrumah said the only reason he was fired from the National Youth Authority was because he decided to stay and criticise the incompetence of the leaders and was not going to repeat the same mistake. “I prefer being out of the administration in order to fully criticise its leadership and once new leaders take control, I will be back,” he added. He said the only reason the former President, Jerry John Rawlings, was doing a similar thing but preferred to stay and criticise was because he was the founder of the party, and added, “His position doesn't allow him to leave”. He said the 2008 flag-bearer of the Convention People's Party, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, was doing the same thing and had opted out of the CPP in order to articulate effectively, his vision of how to achieve accelerated national development. Asked whether or not Dr Nduom's decision would have any impact on election 2012, Mr Nkrumah said it would only divide the votes for the CPP.
