The General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will get only two votes from its merger with the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie known in political circles as ‘Sir John’, stated that the DFP has two votes; being those of its life patron, Dr. Obed Asamoah and Bede Zieding.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Sir John said the merger does not scare the NPP one bit.
The DFP emerged as a splinter of the NDC after Obed Asamoah and others were heckled at the NDC congress in Koforidua in 2005, which saw the exit of some big wigs in NDC like Dr. Obed Asamoah, Bede Zieding, Frances Essiam and Piesie Anto to form the DFP.
The DFP however announced its come back to the NDC over the weekend.
Sir John assessed that Dr. Obed Asamoah does not have a support base to add to the numbers for the NDC, saying the merger will not make any difference.
He said may be the NDC has given assurance to Dr. Obed Asamoah that Rawlings has been relegated to the background and he (Obed Asamoah) will have his way in the NDC.
He noted with sadness that Mr. Rawlings, who founded the NDC and played pivotal roles in the victory of the NDC in 2008 elections, has been relegated to the background.
Sir John dismissed an assertion that there is internal democracy in the NDC, questioning why the party disallowed former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings from entering a hall during her ‘thank you tour’ to the Central Region
He said it is clear that Atta Mills is vindictive and is not the right person to be re-elected, taking into consideration how the former President and his wife were being treated in the party.
Sir John argued that Rawlings has done a lot for the NDC and needs to be commended but not condemned by the NDC.
A Political Science Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Amakye Boateng, said it would have been proper if the NDC had welcomed the DFP closed doors instead of the publicly celebrating their return.
Mr. Anakye Boateng claimed welcoming Dr. Obed Asamoah and his DFP publicly could send offending signals to the Rawlingses.
Amakye Boateng suggested that what the NDC and its elders should do now is to invite Mr. Rawlings and Dr. Obed Asamoah and resolve the differences between the two personalities to ensure a formidable party in 2012 elections.
He said the NDC will pay dearly for ignoring Mr. Rawlings when the party loses in 2012 elections since he is the embodiment of the party.
In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Organizer for the DFP, Sarfo Adams Jnr has said the decision to join the NDC is that of Dr. Obed Asamoah since the regional executives were not informed of the merger.
He alleged that the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central and the Eastern regions are not part of the merger.
