A member of the NPP Communications Team has described President John Mahama’s ascendancy to the presidency as ‘lucky’ because the law was on his side. According to Yaw Buaben Asamoah, President Mahama was lucky the Constitution stipulated that the Vice President should be sworn into office as President if the sitting leader passes away or is unable to discharge his duties because some members of his party, the National Democratic Congress are unhappy with him and would not have allowed him to lead the party. Mr Buaben Asamoah says indications within the NDC show President Mahama may not have won an open flagbearer contest because some power brokers and long serving members believe they are better qualified. The former Special Assistant to then Vice President Aliu Mahama made the assertion on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show when contributing to discussions on President Mahama’s decision to select his Vice, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, as his running mate in the December polls. Then Vice President John Mahama was sworn in as President when Prof John Atta Mills passed away on July 24, 2012. “He (President Mahama) was lucky because it is the law that has made him who he is today. If you look at some of the people in that group (NDC), I’m not sure they would have given the mantle to him if everything had gone smoothly and they had gone for Congress. This is worrying them, but they cannot say it because many people believe they are better or closer to it (Presidency) than him,” he stated. To make matters worse, according to Mr Asamoah, President Mahama has chosen someone who is even less liked than himself, citing the disaffection, most loudly voiced by Eastern region Minister Victor Smith, against the selection of Mr Amissah-Arthur as Vice President. He dismissed the NDC claim that Mr Amissah-Arthur, who is the immediate past Governor of the Bank of Ghana, would be a better manager of the economy than the NPP’s Mahamudu Bawumia, who was a deputy Governor, saying Mr Amissah-Arthur’s record as a long-serving former Deputy Minister of Finance and later as BoG Governor were nothing to write home about. According to the NPP communicator, Vice President Amissah-Arthur was also chosen to show the NDC had not abandoned Central region after President Mills died, although his relatives at Moree, his hometown, have indicated he hardly comes home.
