A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Ghana is picketing at the Mallam end of the N1 Highway and demanding the Highway be named after Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom has been cleared. According to Joy News' Cyrus deGraft Johnson, members of the group have been picked by the police and sent to the police headquarters. They had been picketing at the Mallam end of the highway protesting what they called attempts to sideline Dr Nduom and ignore his contributions to Ghana acceding to the MCA compact The group said Dr Nduom, who served as Public Sector Minister in the erstwhile Kufuor government, engineered the process that led to Ghana accessing the $547 million under the Millennium Challenge Account - part of which has been used to construct the road - deserves credit for the project. Spokesperson for the group, Alister Nelson, told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah they want to draw attention to the unfairness going on the matter. He claimed the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) had mounted its banners on the road seeking to unfairly take credit it did not deserve. Mr Nelson said ignoring the Progressive People’s Party founder, Dr Nduom’s contribution to the MCA was retrogressive and would not encourage other Ghanaians to, in the future, do their best for the country. He claimed Dr Nduom had not even been invited to participate in the ceremony today to open the road to motorists. But Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), who was on the Super Morning Show, discounted the claims. He said Dr Nduom had not only been invited to the launch but also to lunch. “I personally signed the two letters to Dr Nduom,” he stated. In any case jostling for personal credit, he said, was completely unnecessary and unfortunate. He said the Kufuor government assembled 30 Ghanaians with diverse experiences who drew the compact that won for Ghana the money. If each of the 30 people starts asking for personal credit, there will be chaos. He said Ghana was selected from applicants across the world to access the funds because of good governance and not any single individual's efforts. Cyrus reported the event grounds was packed with supporters of the governing NDC clad in party colours.
