Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo and Deputy Trade Minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije is alleging that saboteurs are behind recent market fires in his constituency.
The Makola Number 2 Market in Accra last night was razed by fire. Tuesday night’s fire is the latest to have gutted markets in the capital, in fact it’s the sixth market fire in less than two months with the Kantamanto fire still fresh on the minds of people.
The fire destroyed rows of shops and properties leaving the traders helpless.
“I don’t believe this one is natural occurrence, six fires all in markets within one month? I don’t believe so,” Nii Lantey Vanderpuije told Joy News.
When asked if it might be intentional, the Deputy Minister answered in affirmative stressing, “I will not rule it out”.
“Why should it happen when everybody has left the market?” he wondered, “If it is electrical then it should happen during the day when people are using appliances.”
He reiterated: “I don’t know the cause but will not rule out intentional sabotage”.
“My constituents are suffering, they are under siege by people who want to cause fear and panic in the area by starting this first by burning things, but I think the security services must rise up and fish those people out.”
Meanwhile, some affected traders are blaming the ECG and some of their colleagues who leave their appliances on, during blackout which usually ignite the fire when the power is restored but with high voltage.
They are calling for education so that traders will appreciate the need to switch off all the necessary appliances before leaving the market.
