The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has no immediate plans to reduce transport fares despite a reduction in prices of petroleum products.
The national chairman of the GPRTU Alhaji Yaw Manu said transport fares are not solely determined by the increase in prices of petrol.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) announced a one per cent reduction in prices of petrol, the second reduction in less than a month with a cumulative six per cent decrease in prices of the product.
For a union reputed for increasing prices of transport fares soon after NPA announces hikes in petroleum products, many thought they will announce a reduction in transport fares, even if marginal, especially after the NPA announced two reductions in the last month.
But Alhaji Manu told Citi News they will not announce any reduction, at least not yet.
“We didn’t increase our lorry fares because of the increase in petrol. No. We increase it purposely because of the products we are using like lorry tyres and spare parts.
“So if the government reduces the price of petrol we the drivers are not going to do anything about that,” he said.
