New Patriotic Party (NPP) Deputy Communications Director Samuel Awuku has accused the police of bias over their decision to allow a pro-government group to embark on a demonstration after preventing a pro-opposition group from engaging in a similar action a couple of weeks ago.
On Tuesday, a group calling itself the “Coalition of Ghanaian Voters” embarked on a peace march to protest what they say is the disrespectful attitude of the Minority in Parliament. Members of the group also petitioned Parliament to call members of the pro-NPP group the “Let My Vote Count Alliance” to order for using “abusive words” against the president.
On January 8, 2013, police blocked a planned demonstration by the NPP youth wing, the Young Patriots, due to their choice of the Obra Spot as their convergence point.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam programme on Wednesday, Mr Awuku claimed the police have continuously offered various excuses as they prevent the opposition from demonstrating, calling it undemocratic for the police to use the Public Order Act against opposition members any time they try to demonstrate.
He said the decision by the Coalition of Ghanaian Voters to take their petition to Parliament was misguided since the members in question of the “Let My Vote Count Alliance” are not Members of Parliament.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the People’s National Convention Bernard Mornah, who is also a member of Coalition of Ghanaian Voters, criticized the NPP for disrespecting the judicial process while the party’s 2012 flagbearer Naka Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and party National Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey petition the Supreme Court to nullify the election results.
According to Mr. Mornah, members of the NPP express disrespect for the Supreme Court by protesting the election in the streets while expecting the Court to rule in their favour.
