All is set for the special conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra today.
Delegates will vote to make some 48 amendments to the opposition party’s constitution.
The proposals range from expansion of the party’s Electoral College to a name change from New Patriotic Party to National Patriotic Party.
Today’s conference has been heralded by sharp divisions over some of the proposals.
A section associated with former president Kufuor, don’t want the Electoral College expanded or the number of presidential aspirants limited to three.
This group does not also agree to the proposed name change. A second group has been linked to the party’s flagbearer in the last elections, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Analysts say these camps pose a danger to the smooth approval of the amendments.
Political Scientist Kwasi Jonah agrees with pollster Ben Ephson that today’s conference could cause some trouble in the party if care is not taken.
