The Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Mr. Affail Monney has been explaining the rationale behind a meeting between the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo and the executives of the association on Monday. According to Mr. Monney, the meeting was to offer the NPP leader a chance to explain why he had taken the position to go to court to challenge the declaration of President Mahama as the president-elect following the December 7 and 8 Presidential Elections. In an interview with XYZ News’ Charity Bartels, Mr. Monney said “as journalists we have a key role to play in our democratic process and so the flagbearer of the NPP came with a delegation to explain why they are taking their legal challenge to the Supreme Court.” “In view of our role as determinants of public opinion, they needed to explain to us why they have taken that line of action so that we will also disseminate the right steps they have taken to the consuming public,” he said. He revealed that the NPP are ready to go to court by Thursday to present the evidence gathered so far before the Supreme Court. “We learnt that they will go to court by Thursday - by Thursday they will go to court - and they assured us that they believe in democracy, they believe in rule of law and they will not instigate or incite people to do anything that will destabilize this country or imperil the freedom we enjoy,” he added. He said the GJA executives advised the NPP officials to restrain their irate supporters, adding “the leadership needs to take frontal role.”
