The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Omane Boamah has described as insincere the timing argument being raised by the New Patriotic Party in respect of the creation of the 45 new constituencies.
The opposition party is vehemently opposed to the creation of the new constituencies and has resorted to several remedies, including legal suits to prevent the EC from going ahead with the creation of the constituencies.
Among other key issues they are raising is time. The Minority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu at a press conference stated the NPP is not necessarily against the creation of the constituencies, neither is it challenging the powers of the EC so to do.
He argued their biggest challenge in the creation of the new constituencies is that it is too close to the election and will not guarantee enough time for the political parties to prepare.
He said to give the political parties two months to conduct primaries and elect candidates in 45 new constituencies is an enterprise too risky and could slide the country into chaos.
But on Joy FM and MultiTV news analysis programme, Saturday, the Deputy Sports Minister said the NPP is being mischievous and insincere.
According to him, the opposition party is yet to conduct primaries in Nkawkaw and Bekwai and wondered why the party is not worried about the issue of timing.
“The NPP has failed the sincerity test,” he stated, adding their penchant to oppose anything and everything is in their DNA.
He said the conduct of the NPP would have been credible if they had conducted all their primaries, adding, NPP parliamentary aspirants in the yet-to-be-created constituencies must also seize campaigning.
Even though the courts are yet to pronounce on the legality of the 45 new districts, Dr Boamah is convinced that the legal argument being raised will also not pass the test.
The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament Rashid Pelpuo who was also on the show accused the minority of dabbling in so much misinformation which has led to otherwise credible institutions risking their reputations.
He justified the NDC’s holding of primaries in the new constituencies, saying a responsible party will not wait until the CI matures in 21 days before holding its primaries.
He said the posture of the NPP appears to be poisoning the political temperature.
