The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress says the opposition New Patriotic Party is bound to lose the election petition case it filed at the Supreme Court on Friday. Johnson Asiedu Nketia in an interview on Radio Gold said the petition was grounded on lies and deception and will therefore not stand up to scrutiny in court. The NPP is contesting the validity of the 2012 election declaration and in accordance with the election rules it has proceeded to the Supreme Court with a petition. The three petitioners are the flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, vice presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the party chair Jake Obetsebi Lamptey. The suit had the president John Mahama as the first respondent and the Electoral Commission as the second, all of whom have ten days to respond. Shortly after filing the petition at the Supreme Court, the NPP organised a press conference and took journalists through some of the claims contained in their petition. They said over 1.3 million votes were illegally counted, a figure which when properly adjusted would tilt the results in favour of the NPP candidate. But in a reaction, the NDC General Secretary mocked at the decision of the opposition party to go to court. “Any idiot can file a process in court,” he said, adding the NPP’s case was grounded on lies and contradictory figures being bandied about by leading members of the party. “When you tell one lie, you have to support it with nine other lies,” he said. Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the NDC had audited its own figures and they tallied with those provided by the Electoral Commission. He said the NPP leadership had failed its supporters and the decision to go to court could only be a smokescreen to cover up their own incompetence. The NDC scribe opined Nana Akufo-Addo must muster the courage and tell his supporters that the NPP has lost the election. He also advised the party Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie and organiser Moctar Bamba to take political lessons at the District Council level before moving on to the National level.
