The National Youth Organizer of the NPP has kicked against the government’s intention to allow a private firm to import Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to augment production at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
According to Anthony Karbo, giving the right to one individual to import LPG is not the way to go; rather, creating the enabling environment for more people to import the product is what will help reduce the constant shortage of the product.
He was contributing to a panel discussion on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Wednesday on LPG shortages that have hit the country recently.
The NPP Youth Organizer questioned why only one private individual should be given the opportunity to import LPG, arguing that during the eight-year tenure of the NPP, the country did not experience such severe shortages as now.
However, a presidential staffer, Alhaji Halidu Haruna blamed the shortage on increased number of commercial cars changing from petrol to gas and general increase in population over the years as factors contributing to the shortage and not government’s incompetence.
He insisted that government is committed to ensuring that Ghanaians get a constant supply of LPG and that is why government is partnering the private company to expand the storage capacity at TOR.
Alhaji Halidu also accused the opposition NPP of not expanding the country’s oil jetty and urged government to as a matter of urgency expand the oil jetty (landing stage) to make it possible to offload crude and other related products to ease the pressure on TOR.
At the moment the country has only one oil jetty point which offloads all crude products, including petrol, diesel, Premix fuel and other related crude products.
