A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West constituency has accused the sitting member of parliament of the area Madam Irene Naa Torshie Addo of creating divisions within the party.
Mr. Kwabena Sarpong who spoke to Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Adom FM Wednesday said, until Madam Naa Torshie Addo won the seat in the constituency, the party was fairly united on all fronts and that her actions have created factions in the ranks of the party, a situation that can derail their chances of coming back to power in the upcoming general elections.
Mr Kwabena Sarpong was reacting to allegations that candidates who are vying for the seat in the constituency are been forced to step aside to enable the sitting MP go unopposed.
An NPP group in the constituency earlier this month were up in arms against the party leadership for allegedly trying to impose the MP on the constituents by intimidating competitors to pull out of the race.
Buttressing his point, Mr Sarpong said Madam Naa Torshie Addo single handedly selected 444 delegates and appointed all constituency coordinators towards the primaries, insisting that “she spearheaded” the appointments in order to swing the constituency primaries her way.
As far as he is concerned, everyone who is eligible should be allowed to contest against the sitting MP, warning if anyone is disqualified from the contest “NPP must say goodbye to Tema West.”
He said it was rumoured that the former Finance Minister and MP for Old Tafo/Pankrono, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei has allegedly advised the former MP of the area, Abraham Osei Aidoo to convince others to step aside for the sitting MP to represent the constituency again.
Even though he admitted that he has not spoken to Dr. Akoto Osei in relation to the allegations, he stressed that if there is any iota of truth behind the allegations the party executives should take it up seriously.
Mr. Sarpong insisted that the MP has amassed all the necessary arsenals to ensure that she wins and that it comes to him as a surprise for the MP to be scheming to contest unopposed, adding if she has been working hard, there would not have been the need for such ideas.
