Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Adetan constituency Kojo Adu-Asare has described the Minority’s boycott of President John Mahama’s State of the Nations Address as disgraceful. He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs have done a great disservice to the people who elected them into Parliament. The Minority MPs boycotted the president’s maiden sessional address because their flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and two others are in court challenging Mr Mahama’s legitimacy to serve as president. The NPP MPs, who are convinced the Supreme Court will rule in their candidate’s favour, refuse to participate in any government business that relates directly to the president. Speaking on Adom FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Mr Adu-Asare said the NPP MPs should bow their heads in shame for flouting the Constitution. According to him, until the Supreme Court issues a verdict on the petition against the results declared in the 2012 presidential election, Mahama remains the legitimate president of the country and must be afforded the respect he deserves. “The NPP minority MPs are lawless lawmakers and there is no way they can justify their actions,” he declared. Mr Adu-Asare indicated that even if Mr Akufo-Addo and his cohorts win their case in court, any law formulated by the Mahama-led administration cannot be annulled. The former Adetan MP claimed that even though the minority left the chamber, some of them hypocritically went to Parliamentary clerks’ offices to watch the proceedings on television. He said the NPP MPs shortchanged Ghanaians by succumbing to the whims and caprices of their party leadership. The NDC man quipped that the Minority could choose to boycott all government programmes because the governing party is moving forward to build a better nation for Ghanaians. He added that the minority MPs should not be paid with taxpayer money.
