A clash between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Chereponi yesterday resulted in injuries to a number of people.
Four persons with serious injuries were rushed to the Yendi Government Hospital.
The confusion broke out when supporters of the two parties clashed at a junction near the town's central square. While the NDC was holding a rally at a suburb of Chereponi, the NPP was performing the funeral of its late MP Doris Asibi Seidu who died last July.
They threw stones at each other and for about 40 minutes the whole town became chaotic as supporters of the two parties poured into the streets with all forms of dangerous weapons.
Security personnel had to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd.
Both parties blamed each other for the tension and pandemonium. Meanwhile, the District Security Committee (DISEC) has banned all political activities ahead of the bye-election on Tuesday.
The Chairman of DISEC, Alhaji Seidu Issah Abbas, has advised party executives to obey the ban to ensure peace in the town and safety of the people.
