The New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary candidate for the Tain constituency in the Brong Ahafo region is in the grips of the police for his alleged involvement in violence at a registration center at a village called Sabieh.
Ofori Amanfo and five other party activists who were picked up Saturday have not been formally charged.
Brong Ahafo regional Chairman of the party Mr Asomah Cheremeh however maintains the suspects are innocent.
Mr. Cheremeh told Joy News that their candidate for the constituency was not at the scene of the clashes between supporters of the NDC and the NPP.
“The candidate was at Nsokor and he heard that there was a problem at a village called Sabieh so he together with his secretary, youth organizer, treasurer and two other officers sought to go there and see for themselves the problems over there.”
The regional chairman said while on his way, the parliamentary aspirant, met a car with gun-wield people on board. They allegedly stopped him and gave him a chase, but on their way, they met the police commander who arrested them.
All the six suspects have been denied bail. The Brong Ahafo regional chairman accused the police of bias in handling the issue and warns it could provoke further violence.
He accused the NDC of going to hire macho men who were riding on motorbikes and giving warning shots throughout the night.
“Though we know that some of the police officers over here have take sides we will not take the law into our hands but if we keep on reporting to the police and the police do no action about it then we will advice ourselves accordingly,” he stressed.
But the Brong Ahafo regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Eric Amoako denied taking sides and said his outfit is handling the cases professionally.
“We have not just arrested those people for the sake of arrest they should leave politics out of this it is purely a criminal matter. They want to politicize everything how can we live in this country like that?” he said.
