The General-Secretary of the NPP, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has made a strong call to President John Mahama to undertake widespread and thorough consultation before appointing the Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan who has been steering the affairs of the Commission over the last two decades is expected to go on retirement later this year.

A new chair is expected to be appointed to possibly oversee the District Level elections, the 2016 elections, and subsequent ones.

Few names have come up including Deputy EC chair Amadu Sulley. Ahead of the planned appointment by the President, the opposition NPP is urging the President to consult widely before making the appointment.

The Chief Scribe of the party Kwabena Agyapong in a statement insisted that the Electoral Commission has suffered major setbacks arising from the revelations during the Election Petition at the Supreme Court and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court which culminated in the cancellation of the District Assembly elections which occasioned colossal losses to the exchequer.

He stressed that, it was important for the Electoral Commission to win back the confidence of the Ghanaian people.

To achieve this goal, Mr Kwabena Agyepong posited that the President should through his Council of State engage all major stakeholders in a constructive manner in order to appoint a new chairman for the EC who will inspire the revival of public confidence in the commission.
