The National Youth Authority (NYA) is set to review the current youth policy and develop a comprehensive one to transform the Ghanaian youth into productive members of society and drivers of Ghana's socio-economic development.

The current one, according to the Chief Executive Officer of NYA, Emmanuel Asigri is like an airplane without a pilot.

“The NYA presides over a frightening youth demographic in which more than 57 percent of Ghanaians are under 25 years but we have an underwhelming national youth policy that is outdated and overrun by severe and global changes” he stated.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting for the review of the National Youth Policy in Accra, Mr. Asigri bemoaned how the 27-page document outdoored in 2000 had no implementation plan which in his view is akin to “packed passengers in an airplane without a pilot”.

Based on this backdrop, he underscored the need for a review of the policy that is “urgent, updated, inclusive, visionary and executable”.

The new one, the NYA boss noted will take into consideration the African Union’s Agenda 2063 plan to dedicate 50 years to empower African youth.

“We need a youth policy which is in sync with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of which goals eight and 17 directly affect the youth” he stated.

Mr. Asigri revealed that the NYA will soon begin a national collation of ideas in the 216 districts to consult the youth across the country on the review process.

“We are in a make or break season as youth leaders and workers and our aim is to write our names in the rocks of Ghana’s history books and not for our inaction to get us write it in erasable sands of time” he stressed.

The Information sharing forum brought together youth groups, policy makers, civil society groups, Youth Organizers of the various political parties and other interest groups.
