A political sociologist at the University of Cape Coast says priority must be given to providing offices for MPs at Parliament House. Mr Kingsley Adjei said the MPs, like chief executives, must be given offices to work from, plus supporting staff to assist them carry out their daily tasks. His comments follow President Mills’ promise at his second State of the Nation Address to build offices for MPs in their constituencies. For Mr Adjei, the President might have said that taking into consideration the fact that many of the legislators hardly visit their constituencies. An office in the constituency will assist the MPs to work more effectively. The MPs have been arguing among themselves in the corridors of Parliament over the plan. Opposition MPs have criticized the idea saying it does not make sense to offer constituency offices when MPs do not have offices in Parliament House. New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Asokwa, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, told Joy News’ Sammy Darko in Parliament that although building offices for MPs in their constituencies might not be a bad idea, priority must be given to providing the legislators places to conduct business at Parliament House. “The work of Parliament is not in our constituencies…The work of Parliament is in Parliament House…So you appoint somebody to be your representative at the United Nations and you put their office in Accra? Please what kind of logic is this? Let us confront the issue. Members of parliament are elected to represent their constituencies in Accra where Parliament House is [and] not in their constituencies,” he said. However, MPs from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) say the President has taken a perfect decision. Majority Chief Whip, Gershon Gbediame, told Joy News offices in the constituencies – not in Accra – will serve the MPs and their constituents better. Although the project has yet to start, it is unclear which proposition the President would implement first. Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana Sammy Darko contributed reporting
