The Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA) has released a squad of just ten players for the upcoming 2014 Copa Lagos tournament.
Although more players can be named by each participating team, the GBSA is constrained by the financial and logistical challenges to cut down on any additional numbers to the Black Sharks.
The Association, through spokesperson George Addo has stated that ”due to lack of sponsorship, we are unable to confirm the number of additional beach soccer club managers who have also expressed interest in being part of the Copa Lagos tournament to observe and learn”.
According to the statement, this situation also applies to the media. ”However in the event that sponsorship is made available, considerations for bigger and wider representation will be reviewed”.
It is understood that Coach Francis Oti Akenteng has been approached to lead the technical team due to his immense knowledge and experience.
One significant change to the beach soccer technical set-up is the elevation from coach to technical coordinator of Maxwell Kpeglo.
He will be assisted by Theophilus Nii Armah whilst Johnny Heeman Mawusi and Daniel Kotey Neequaye handle the team for the minimum of three games at the Copa Lagos.
According to the GBSA spokesman, the changes have been introduced to afford other coaches gain experience.
Globally, beach soccer falls under the supervision and support of national football associations affiliated to FIFA but that formalization is yet to fully take off in Ghana.
Even though the association has officially presented their credentials, budgets and a five-year developmental plan to the Ghana FA, the major stumbling block is the lack of sponsorship.
Camping was expected to commence in Ada last Sunday, but the association says that has not been possible since CAL Bank, GFA and the Sports Ministry have not released any additional funds to support the Black Sharks.
