Queens in various parts of the country continue to perform various roles and demonstrate exemplary traditional leadership to have a meaningful impact on the lives of people in their traditional areas.
Some of them support educational programmes and conduct regular public-health education sessions in towns and villages.
Typical topics include the risks of teenage pregnancy and safe sex practices, with special emphasis on abstinence when it comes to teens.
Like most queens, the Offinsohemaa of Offinso in the Ashanti Region, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, who climaxed the celebration of the silver jubilee anniversary of her enstoolment with a durbar of chiefs and people of Offinso, has a lot to share.
The anniversary, marked on the theme: “Twenty-five years of the queen’s exemplary traditional leadership and an acknowledgement of service to Offinso," also coincided with the launch of the Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko Foundation, which is aimed at promoting health, education and charity service to the needy in the community.
Addressing the durbar, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Madam Anima Wilson, said promoting women's health and educating the girl-child were very critical issues necessary for the development of any nation, and added that the development of the girl-child was inextricably linked with the health and development of women and society in general.
She said the promotion of girls’ education was not only an entry point to other opportunities, but a major prerequisite for women’s development, empowerment, skills and self-confidence, which often have ripple effects on the family.
She said as an embodiment of peace and advocate of women's empowerment, queens needed to be given all the support and encouragement to promote education and health care.
She, therefore, urged corporate organisations and individuals for support.
Madam Wilson pointed out that the government had always considered access to quality education and health as inviolable rights of every Ghanaian child and would, therefore, continue to invest in projects and programmes that would improve infrastructure in all educational and health institutions in the country.
She called on the chiefs and stakeholders to support the efforts of the government to promote peace and unity in the upcoming general election.
The Mampong, Omanhene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who was the guest of honour, said queens had a major responsibility in the promotion and development of the chieftaincy institution in the country.
He said traditional rulers respected and cherished the roles and contributions of queens in the promotion of peace and unity, the development of girl-child education and health, among others, for the development of their communities.
He commended Nana Serwaa Nyarko for her enviable efforts to provide scholarship packages to promote education, especially of the girl child, motherly care and humanitarian service in the community.
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko expressed her appreciation to the chiefs and the people of Offinso for their support for the development of the area.
She stated that developing education and health care was not the sole responsibility of the government and the chiefs but a shared responsibility of all Ghanaians, and therefore called for public support and encouragement.
The Offinsohene, Nana Wiafe Akenteng III, graced the occasion and presented a Rexton vehicle to Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko.
