Frank Davies, lawyer for former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has suggested that any move by the Government of Ghana to extradite his client from the United States could face a legal challenge.

According to him, although Ghanaian authorities have reportedly initiated steps to secure the return of the former minister, the legal processes surrounding the request are still ongoing and may become the subject of a contest in court.

Mr Davies indicated that the extradition request is intended to facilitate Mr Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana to respond to legal matters.

However, he maintained that his client’s legal team would respond appropriately once the process reaches the relevant stage.

He further noted that discussions surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s immigration status in the United States should not be confused with the extradition proceedings currently under consideration.

Mr Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s finance minister from 2017 to 2024 under the previous administration, is currently being held at a detention facility in Virginia under the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after his arrest by immigration authorities earlier this year.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, March 15, Mr Davies said there were strong indications that the extradition move would be contested.

“At the back of all this, the Government of Ghana has put in an extradition request, and from the proceedings so far, there is every indication that this matter will be contested,” he said.
