The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has appealed to the youth, especially students, to get involved in farming and see farming as the backbone of the country's economy.
He urged them not to see farming as punishment but rather as a source of raising income to help the development of the country.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo was opening the 26th National Farmers Day Exhibition at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo District.
He said the introduction of the Youth in Agriculture Programme (YIAP) was an intervention to make the youth participate in agriculture.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the Regional Director of Agriculture was putting in place modern facilities, which would help the Youth in Agriculture to grow crops all year round.
He commended the Yilo Krobo District for cultivating more crops and producing high varieties of crops in the region.
Nene Osayem Tetteh Odorkor Tuumeh, Acting President of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council, said the growing population of the country needed to grow more food.
He expressed appreciation to the Regional Minister on his efforts to encourage many people, especially the youth, to go into agriculture.
