The General Secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says suggestion of a pairing of Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyerematen as presidential candidates to contest on the ticket of the party in the 2012 elections, without recourse to the constitution of the party will be most inappropriate.
Nana Ohene Ntow said although Alan Kyerematen - who had the second biggest support during the party's last flagbearer contest - and Nana could pair for the next presidential election, there is the need for constitutional processes to be exhausted first.
The NPP General Secretary was speaking in an interview on the Super Morning Show on Tuesday.
“There are constitutional procedures that we go through in selecting the flagbearer of the party. There are constitutional procedures you go through in selecting the running mate. Those are the considerations that I think we should look at, first of all, before you add on any consultations or any behind-the-scene stuff,” Nana Ntow stressed.
“Right now let us focus on selecting the leadership of the party; putting the party structure in place.
“We would look at the practicality of the situation, the constitutional demand and also other approaches that you can combine. If at the end of the day, the most strategic thing to do is to put those two gentlemen forward, I’m sure that congress will decide that,” he indicated.
The General Secretary’s comments come days after the office of Nana Akufo-Addo issued a statement saying he does not reject such a position. It followed allegations that he (Nana Addo) would reject any such suggestion if he won the flagbearer position again for for Election 2012.
Suggestions that there are deep cracks within the rank and file of the party does not mean members do not want unity of focus and purpose, Nana Ohene Ntow said.
“I think the message that is coming from the party rank and file is that we want our party together. We don’t care whether you belong to this or that; we believe this person can do the job for us and [we] vote them in there,” he related.
“The material evidence is that the party people have virtually given a command that we want our party together.”
The main opposition party holds its congress in February to elect national and constituency executives but already there is talk of simmering tensions even though election of a presidential candidate comes far later.
But Nana Ntow said the party would soon recover from what could possibly blur the party’s chances in the 2012 contest.
