Banks and financial institutions are increasingly devising ways to outdo each other in the face of growing competition. After SG-SSB launched its bank in a box concept, another financial institution has introduced a creative way of reaching out to the unbanked population. The “mobile branch” concept from Opportunity International Bank is a typical bank branch except that it is mounted on wheels and so can be moved around. “It is more like a brick and mortar branch that is on wheel. So we take the whole branch to the community. It will be manned by three people; two tellers and one customer service person,” Head of Delivery Channel Jonathan Cato told Joy Business. “They will be able to do all other things that a brick and mortar branch will be able to offer. He said they will move to rural communities where there is no banking services, operate for a day and move to another community. “In that one day the van will move from one point to another in that same community until we saturate the place.
