The Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has reacted strongly to comments by the First Deputy Speaker that he did not follow due procedure in ordering the arrest of businessman Alfred Woyome. The PAC Chair, Albert Kan-Dapaah had indicated he was going to instruct the police to force Mr. Woyome to appear before the committee to answer questions about his receipt of GHc 51 million in judgment debts from government after he declined two invitations and a subpoena. The First Deputy Speaker, Doe Adjaho said the PAC Chair could not have acted in such a manner without reference to the Speaker. But Mr. Dapaah who spoke to Joy News, said the First Deputy Speaker got it all wrong and added that his colleague would have done himself a lot of good by not interfering in the matter. He explained that his threat to ask the IGP to produce Mr Woyome before the PAC did not mean due processes will not be followed. “I have no right to order the IGP to bring him. I have to go through the Speaker. Mr Doe Adjaho doesn’t help himself by commenting on issues that don’t concern him.” “If Madam Speaker decides not to invite the IGP to bring Mr Woyome, will I be right to assume that it was because of pressure from Hon. Doe Adjaho?” He asked. Mr Kan Dapaah noted that should the Speaker decline his request, he will respect her decision but added that “I cannot imagine why she would not do that apart from pressure from Hon. Doe Adjaho and if that happens I will take it from there and decide the best course of action from me personally.” In another development, Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu has also taken exception to the comments by the First Deputy Speaker, saying his colleague cannot claim to be acting as Speaker of Parliament simply because the substantive speaker is out of the country.
