Parliament has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability and Optional Protocol laid before Parliament on July 20, 2011 by the committee on Employment, Social Welfare and State Enterprises.
The purpose of the UN convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability and Optional Protocol, is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedom by all persons with disabilities and to promote respect of their inherent dignity.
Member states are required to ensure, all signatories to the convention make an undertaking to ensure and promote the full realization of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all persons with disabilities without discrimination of any kind on the basis of a disability.
Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Albert Kan-Dapaah called for special provision to be made in the national budget for persons with disability.
He also urged government to ensure, the school for the blind is equipped with their special computers so they are abreast with current technology.
The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Alfred Kwame Agbesi called for the redesigning of the public gallery of Parliament to make it accessible to persons with disability.
Other members of the house also called for extensive education for the general public on persons living with a disability to ensure a smooth and effective operation of the law.
