A 40-year-old compensation complain has been revisited following the sod-cutting ceremony to begin the Bui Dam project.
Complaints about inadequate or no compensation have been made by people who were affected by the construction of the Akosombo Dam.
When the Akosombo Dam was being constructed, government set up a directorate under the Volta River Authority to address the anticipated effects of the project on the residents within the catchments area.
But some forty years later, some of the people in areas like Agave, Tefle, Sokpue, Fieve, Bume all in the South Tongu district of the Volta region who were forced out of their local communities are saying that the compensation that government paid to them was inadequate.
Some others have said that they have not been covered by the plan and have been giving nothing to make any livelihood from.
As a result of this historical antecedent the people of the Banda traditional area who live in the catchment area of the Bui have expressed fears about their fate.
They are worried about their homes, land and livelihood as construction of the Bui hydro electric project is set to begin.
They said they are not sure if they will get compensation at all for giving up their lands and livelihood for the project.
As a result of the experiences of the people within the catchment area of the Volta river, the people of Banda have said that they are not leaving anything to chance.
