Candidate for the People's National Convention (PNC) in Tuesday’s Parliamentary by-election in Talensi has rejected the results on grounds that they were tampered with.
Dr. Michael Wombeago told Joy News' Beatrice Adu Wednesday Electoral Commission (EC) officials are neck deep in false election results.
“I tell you the results could be tampered with even at the polling station without the knowledge of other party members and I must be frank with you [that] some of the EC members who were there…there were biases among them”, he said.
He says his allegations are not empty, insisting he has evidence to back them.
“These are not useless allegations. I am not somebody who would like put blame [of not winning the elections] on others. I want to believe that even if these results are counted ballot [box] by ballot box, the results would be different”, he said.
Official results released by the EC yesterday shows that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Mr. B.T. Baba, polled 10,366 votes to beat his closest contenders - Mr Thomas Duanab of the opposition New Patriotic Party and Mr Wombeago.
Duanab polled 6,845 and was neck-to-neck with the PNC candidate who also polled 6,836 in an election that saw five other candidates from the smaller parties poll just a handful of votes.
However, before official declaration of results, PNC General Secretary, Bernard Mornah, demanded a recount of votes, alleging there were some anomalies in the votes in the party’s stronghold.
The NPP and the other political parties who took part in Tuesday’s polls are yet to react to the election results.
The 67-year-old BT Baba would be completing the tenure of the former NPP MP Robert Monsore who has now been enskinned chief of the Tolon Traditional area.
He is a retired Deputy Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service and the former chairman of the Ghana Olympic Committee.
