The Public Affairs Director at the Ghana Police Service has announced massive traffic re-direction in Accra ahead of the 30th anniversary celebration of the June 4 revolution. DSP Kwesi Ofori in a phone interview with Joy News said a section of the Liberation road from Afrikiko through the Christ The King intersection to the 37 Military Hospital will be temporarily closed to traffic from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. The stretch of road between the Cantonments Post Office to the Christ The King intersection will also be closed. Traffic from Afrikiko will be redirected through the Ring Road Central highway and the road in front of TV3 studios. DSP Kwesi Ofori again hinted that vehicles from the Akuafo intersection at the 37 Military Hospital, headed for Accra, will take the Obasanjo Highway to join the Kanda Highway. Traffic from the Airport intersection might find the link through to El Wak stadium a safe route. The Cadres, a pro-government youth group which is rallying support for the June 4 revolution, are said to be feverishly preparing to mark the occasion which suffered a setback during the eight-year rule of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). June 4, 1979 was the day of the mutiny which saw the release of Flt Lt Jerry Rawlings by junior officers of the Military after Mr Rawlings had been detained for plotting a coup. The Cadres have since the assumption of office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pressured government to observe the day, claiming it is an important day to honour the ex-president. Though seminars and forums are being marked around the capital city, the event will be climaxed at the Revolutionary Square, a monument directly opposition the Jubilee House in Accra. The leader of the Cadres, P.K. Aboni, said the occasion is of great significance, and that his colleagues were bent on marking it on Thursday. Although government has no special itinerary for the day, Mr Aboni said the group’s endeavour has a strong governmental support. “June 4 is an important landmark on the NDC government’s calendar,” he told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe at the Revolutionary Square where the group had been preparing for Thursday’s showdown.
