Police in the Central Region have detained about 150 residents of Abura Asebu who marched to the police station clad with red armbands this morning. 

The angry residents, led by their chief and queen mother, besieged the police headquarters upon suspicion that some murder suspects were going to be granted bail by the police.

Joy News’ Central Regional correspondent, Richard Kwadwo Nyarko confirmed that as at 5pm Monday, the people were still being detained.

The chief and his subjects, most of them at advanced ages, walked about 15 kilometers on foot to the regional command to register their displeasure.

According to the residents, they have been gripped with fear and have for some time now felt unsafe going about their normal businesses. Women cannot go to farm unaccompanied, they said.

Without proper sanitation facilities, most of the residents ease themselves in the bush. Kwadwo Nyarko reports that two residents were killed in the bush while attending to nature’s call.

One of the protesters had his wrist completely chopped off by persons he suspected to be behind the killings.

According to the police, the chief and his people were detained because they did not follow the Public Order Act which requires them to notify the police days before embarking on such processions.

The police said patrolling has been intensified in the town but the residents say the police is not doing enough to protect them.

Seven of the leaders have been asked to write their statements and Joy News has learned the residents would be released on condition of good behavior.
