The Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, has stated that there is calm in the Buipe township after about thirty Police officers were deployed to the area. This was after a court ruling last Thursday, upheld Abdullai Jinapor as Buipewura of Buipe. According to the Chief Inspector, a sub chief was attacked after he came out to publicly accept the court ruling by some identified men and is currently receiving treatment. “Information I have received from the town is that the attackers are known so the Police in the area are preparing to bring this person to book”, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh tells Emefa Apawu, host of the Big Bite on Xfm. He says, “we have two options to either go to the court and seek for a criminal summons and serve him to appear in court or we can also go and arrest him physically and process him and send him to court”. He added that the dispute in the Buipe township was only in two areas which the police have brought under control. Meanwhile, a journalist in the Northern Region, Stephen Zoure, has debunked the statement made by the Police, stating that tension was mounting each passing day and that chaos could erupt at anytime. Speaking on the same show, he reveals that, “what is even aggravating the issue follows a decision made by the Yagbonwura and his subordinates who unanimously agreed not to respect the ruling of the court and have decided to appeal against the ruling that Mahama Abdullai Jinapor be reinstated as the legitimate occupant of the Buipe skin”. “The situation is dicey”, he says, and adds, “there is uneasy calm and we cannot predict what is yet to come but there is tension in Buipe”. Stephen Zoure alleged that the Yagbonwura and his subordinates enskinned Awushie Bawa as new chief of Buipe even after the court ruling and thus the Buipe Township has two chiefs. This according to him has therefore created problems in the celebration of the Damba festival since the Buipewura is to precede the festival with drumming and dancing and both Mahama Abdullai Jinapor and Awushie Bawa are preparing to do so. However, Dr. Ahmed, a spokesperson for Mahama Abdullai Gyinapor has affirmed that Awushie Bawa has not been enskinned but was rather appointed with a letter by the Yagbonwura and his subordinates who are in support of him.
