Two students of Mafi-Wute D/A Roman Catholic Basic School in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region risk losing their lives after they were knocked down by a hit-and-run police motor rider last week.
The children were returning from a neighbouring village when the policeman hit them along the Sogakope to Mafi-Kumase road. The victims, Evans Adzomani, 17, and Benedictus Zoni, 16, who were conveyed to the Adidome Hospital, sustained various degrees of injuries, with broken limbs and knees.Health officials of the hospital say the former has been in coma for three days.
A report by an eye witness indicates that at about 6:30pm last Friday, the victims were seen riding on a bicycle while carrying a gallon of petrol at the back.
The policeman, whose name was given as Israel Debo, was seen leading a convoy of mourners of a deceased colleague, G/CPL. Wisdom Quashie, from Sogakope to Mafi-Kumase in a motor display from one part of the road to the other when he hit the students with his motorbike.
According to the witness, the policeman was riding at top speed to the extent that on seeing the students, he seemingly lost control and ran into them. After the incident however, the policeman got lost at the scene and has since not been found.
But members of the victims’ family fear they may not assume their original state even to continue their education due to the critical condition in which they find themselves. The family, therefore, has called on the government, NGOs and well meaning Ghanaians to come to children’s aid.
When the Mafi-Kumase police were contacted, the officer in charge was uncooperative.According to him, they “are not medical officers to determine whether the victims lie in critical condition or not”.
Meanwhile, the policeman who ran into the children is said to hail from Mafi-Kumase but currently works in Accra.credit: Noble Johnson Kukubor, Mafi-KumasiMyjoyonline.com/Ghana
